Whilst there is a lot of discourse around therapy in the media, it can still seem a bit mysterious and you might be wondering what you can really gain from engaging in therapy. Well, here are some things you can get from therapy that might support an improvement in overall wellbeing.


Self-understanding

One of the most helpful results of engaging in therapy is developing a better understanding of yourself. This can include discovering hidden parts of ourselves and gaining clarity about who we are in the present. Knowing more about ourselves is necessary to move towards changing things in our lives which we are unsatisfied with.


Improved relationships

Relationships of all kinds are difficult to navigate. Therapy can provide an opportunity to reflect on our behaviour in relationships and invite alternative perspectives on relationship struggles. The therapeutic relationship often mirrors other relationships in our lives which means it is a unique opportunity to explore our patterns of relating in depth.


Feeling seen and heard

The key essence of therapy is being fully seen and heard by another person. Therapy is possibly the only space in which we can be fully ourselves without worrying about what is going on for the other person. When was the last time you had another person fully listen to you for 50 minutes without jumping to conclusions or offering solutions? Therapy allows this to happen and this can lead to feeling seen and heard in a way we often do not.


Developing skills

We are rarely taught how to respond to painful emotions or difficult life events when we are growing up. Therapy can offer guidance to explore different skills which can help us to manage when things get tough. Some types of therapy give structured tasks to complete for skills development. Other types of therapy are more focused on allowing space to explore different strategies with a trust that people will find the right skills for themselves.
