Frequently Asked Questions
Starting therapy can bring up lots of questions, especially if this is your first experience of counselling.
Below are some common questions about how I work and what you can expect from therapy.
If there’s anything not covered here, you’re welcome to get in touch.
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people come to counselling because they feel
overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, anxious, stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand, or simply want a space
to explore their thoughts and feelings more openly. Therapy can offer support, clarity, and a greater understanding
of yourself and your experiences.
What happens in the first counselling session?
The first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know each other and explore what has brought you to
therapy. There is no pressure to share everything immediately. We will go at a pace that feels comfortable for you,
and you are welcome to ask any questions about the process along the way. Starting therapy can feel daunting,
especially if you are used to managing things alone, and it’s completely normal to feel nervous before a first session.
How much does it cost?
Each 50 minute session currently costs £55. I do offer some reduced cost sessions for those on low income, please ask about this when you get in touch.
How long is each session?
Each session is 50 minutes and arranged weekly on the same day at the same time to provide consistency. After some time, we can discuss less frequent sessions if needed.
Where do you work?
Online sessions are held via Microsoft Teams.
In person sessions are held at The Therapy Centre, 6b Church St, Reading, RG1 2SB.
What types of things can you help with?
I work with people aged 16 and over experiencing a range of difficulties, including:
-
Anxiety and overwhelm
-
Low self-esteem
-
Relationship difficulties
-
Stress and burnout
-
Difficult life experiences
-
Feeling stuck or disconnected
-
Emotional overwhelm
-
Identity and self-understanding
You do not need to have a specific label or diagnosis to seek support.
How long does therapy last?
This varies from person to person. Some people come for short-term support around a particular issue, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore deeper patterns and experiences. We can regularly review how therapy is feeling and what feels most helpful for you.
What type of therapy do you offer?
Integrative rooted in person-centred and psychodynamic theories. Integrative means I use different ways of working that will work best for every individual, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach in how I work. We will walk alongside one another as we explore what is going on for you and how to navigate life's ups and downs.
Can you tell me how to fix my problems?
The purpose of therapy is not to give advice; it is to encourage exploration of self as a way to find your own answers. People usually know what to do about difficulties they are facing on some level, we can dig through all the barriers together but I won't tell you what to do. I strongly believe that you know yourself best and will respect all choices you make.
What can I expect to get from therapy with you?
Therapy is a unique opportunity to be fully listened to and heard. I offer a space free from judgement and expectations where you can be yourself. Everyone has different aims for therapy but generally speaking, there is greater self-acceptance and a deeper understanding of yourself and relationships. If you have a specific goal and are unsure if therapy might help, feel free to ask.
Will you diagnose me?
No, therapy is not about diagnosing anything. If you want to explore thoughts or feelings you have around a previous diagnosis you have been given or self-diagnosis then we can do this.
Will you accommodate for different needs?
Absolutely, we can explore together how therapy might best work for you, please ask for what you need. This could be shorter sessions, more questions, a clear structure, moving about during sessions. If you're not sure what might work, we can test things out together. As a therapist, my role is not to change you so you fit into neat boxes, my role is to meet you where you are.
Are you BACP registered?
Yes, I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work within their ethical framework.
What qualifications do you have?
My current qualifications include:
L5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People
L4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
L3 Certificate in Counselling Studies
L2 Certificate in Counselling Skills
I have also worked in different mental health settings for 10+ years. I take part in ongoing CPD which involves attending additional training, reading and my own personal therapy.
